Association des Personnes à Besoins Spécifiques(APBS)

APBS is a Bamako-based association led by parents of children with disabilities and rehabilitation specialists, dedicated to improving the quality of life and social inclusion of people with special needs in Mali. Its VADEH day centre supports children's cognitive, psychomotor, and socio-educational development while also empowering their caregivers.

About

Founded and managed by parents of children with disabilities together with rehabilitation professionals, APBS operates from Bacodjicoroni Golf in Bamako. The organisation arose from the recognition that children with disabilities and their families faced severe marginalisation and had few community-based support options in Mali.

What They Do

APBS runs the VADEH centre ("Vivre au-delà du handicap" — living beyond disability), providing daily therapeutic and educational support for children with disabilities. An innovative rotating care model gives mothers scheduled time for income-generating activities while their children receive care. APBS also runs community campaigns to reduce stigma, trains local rehabilitation workers, and advocates nationally for disability-inclusive social protection.

Who They Serve

Children with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities in Bamako, and their families — particularly mothers who often bear the full burden of care.
