About

Canine Companions was founded in 1975 in Santa Rosa, California by Bonnie Bergin as the first program of its kind in the United States. The organization breeds, trains, and places assistance dogs with people with disabilities funded entirely through private donations — recipients are never charged for a dog or ongoing support.

What They Do

Canine Companions trains dogs in hundreds of commands tailored to support people with mobility limitations, autism, and other disabilities. The organization provides lifetime support after each placement and operates seven training centers and field offices across the country.

Canine Companions serves children and adults with physical disabilities, neurological conditions, and autism throughout the United States. Facility dogs are also placed in schools, hospitals, courtrooms, and rehabilitation settings nationwide.
