About
Communication Matters (CM) is the UK chapter of ISAAC (International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication), based at the University of Leeds. It has championed the rights of people who use AAC since the 1980s, connecting AAC users with professionals, families, and researchers through its national conference and The Hub online community.
What They Do
CM hosts the annual AAC conference — the largest in the UK with 450+ delegates — publishes the CM Journal, and maintains an evidence library on AAC research and clinical practice. It advocates with NHS England and devolved health bodies for consistent AAC commissioning and for the principle of 'your voice, your way' — ensuring everyone who needs AAC can access it regardless of postcode.
Who They Serve
People of all ages who have little or no functional speech and use AAC — including those with cerebral palsy, ALS/MND, autism, acquired brain injury, and rare syndromes — as well as speech and language therapists, special education teachers, parents, carers, and AAC researchers and manufacturers.
