Organization
LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Founded in 1902, LightHouse is the oldest and largest organisation of its kind in Northern California, providing training, employment support, and community for blind and low-vision individuals in the Bay Area and beyond.
About
LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired was established in 1902 in San Francisco and has grown through a series of mergers into a comprehensive organisation with facilities across Northern California, including the San Francisco headquarters, Enchanted Hills Camp in Napa, the Earle Baum Center in Santa Rosa, and the Sirkin Center in Alameda. Each year LightHouse serves approximately 3,000 individuals.
What They Do
LightHouse offers independent living skills training — including white cane travel, braille, and digital literacy — alongside employment services, early intervention for newly blind individuals, and community programmes. The organisation also runs Enchanted Hills Camp, a residential camp for blind and DeafBlind children and adults, and social enterprises that fund its programmes.
Who They Serve
LightHouse serves blind and low-vision individuals of all ages across California, with a particular concentration in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Services are tailored to adults who are newly blind, children developing foundational skills, and sighted people who are progressively losing vision.
