Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council(LADDC)

The Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council advocates for people with developmental disabilities in Louisiana to have the support and opportunities they need to live the lives they want. Established in 1971 under the federal DD Act, LADDC funds innovative projects, builds grassroots advocacy through its LaCAN network, and shapes state policy for full community inclusion.

About

Created in 1971 following passage of the federal Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, the Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council (LADDC) is composed of 28 governor-appointed Louisianans, the majority of whom have developmental disabilities or are family members. Headquartered in Baton Rouge, the Council coordinates with state agencies, nonprofits, and self-advocates to develop and implement Louisiana's five-year State Plan for developmental disabilities.

What They Do

LADDC funds community demonstration projects, runs the Partners in Policymaking leadership training programme for self-advocates and family members, and builds grassroots advocacy power through LaCAN (Louisiana Council's Advocacy Network). The Council publishes an annual legislative advocacy agenda developed with input from people with disabilities statewide, and actively monitors service systems to protect against cuts and promote access.

Who They Serve

LADDC serves Louisianans with developmental disabilities — including intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy — and their families. All programmes are designed to promote choice, self-determination, and full community participation.
