Organization
Mencap
Mencap is the UK's leading charity supporting people with a learning disability, their families, and carers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It provides direct support services, campaigns for equal rights, and works to make the UK the best place in the world for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives.
About
Founded in 1946 by parents of children with learning disabilities, Mencap has grown into a national organisation operating hundreds of services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Governance rules require that at least half of Mencap's trustees have personal experience of learning disability, and at least one trustee must be a person with a learning disability themselves.
What They Do
Mencap delivers residential support, supported living, employment services, short breaks, and community activities. The charity campaigns on issues including care funding, health inequalities, and the justice system, and maintains a network of local Mencap Network Partners providing grassroots support.
Who They Serve
People with a learning disability of all ages and their families and carers, with particular focus on those who face exclusion from health, employment, and community life.
