About

Founded in 1982 in Berkeley, California, Through the Looking Glass (TLG) emerged from the independent living movement to address a gap in services for families living with disability across generations. The organisation operates from the belief that disability is a natural part of the human experience and that families with disabilities deserve empowering, non-pathologising support.

What They Do

TLG provides early intervention, home visits, parent training, and clinical consultation for families in which a parent or child has a disability or medical condition. The organisation also conducts nationally recognised research on parenting with a disability and offers training and consultation to professionals across the country. Their Adaptive Baby Care Equipment programme loans or sells specialised caregiving devices to disabled parents.

Who They Serve

TLG primarily serves families in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, California, with direct services including weekly home or clinic visits. Through research dissemination, professional training, and national consultations, TLG also supports families and practitioners across the United States.
