About Vidya Sagar

Vidya Sagar — meaning "ocean of learning" in Sanskrit — was formerly known as The Spastics Society of India (Tamil Nadu). It changed its name in 2004 to move away from a medicalised, charity-based identity toward one of capability, learning, and rights. Based in Chennai's Kotturpuram neighbourhood, it has operated for over four decades.

What They Do

  • Special education — a full school programme for children with cerebral palsy, multiple disabilities, and complex communication needs
  • Therapy — physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language therapy on-site
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) — one of the leading AAC programmes in South India
  • Inclusive education — support for disabled children transitioning to or attending mainstream schools in Chennai
  • Adult services — the Integrated Training and Employment Programme (ITEP) for vocational skills and supported work
  • Advocacy — community-based research and campaigns for accessible infrastructure in Tamil Nadu

Who They Serve

Vidya Sagar serves children and adults with cerebral palsy, multiple disabilities, and physical disabilities across Chennai and Tamil Nadu.

Community Note

Vidya Sagar is notable for its strong AAC programme and its rights-based philosophy, which positions disabled people as full citizens rather than recipients of charity.
