About XRCVC
Xavier's Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC) was established in 2003 within St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. It operates as a resource, research, and advocacy centre dedicated to removing barriers faced by people with visual impairment — with a particular emphasis on technology, higher education, and systemic change.
What They Do
- Accessible technology — training in screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver), smartphones, and accessible document creation
- Eyeway helpline — a national information helpline and online portal for blind and low-vision people (operated in partnership with Score Foundation)
- Inclusive higher education — supporting blind students in accessing Mumbai's universities through accessible formats and reader services
- Sensitisation — workshops for teachers, employers, and government officials on visual impairment
- Advocacy — campaigns for accessible public infrastructure, digital content, and government documents
Who They Serve
XRCVC serves people with visual impairment across the age spectrum, with particular strength in youth and higher education support.
Recognition
XRCVC received the National Award for Best Institution Working for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (inclusive education category) from the Government of India in 2024.
