About this resource

About

CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology) is the nonprofit research organisation that developed the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. The UDL Guidelines, freely available at udlguidelines.cast.org, provide the practical evidence base that educators use to design inclusive instruction, curriculum, and assessments.

What It Does

The UDL Guidelines organise inclusive design principles across three networks of the brain: Recognition (the "what" of learning — Representation), Strategic (the "how" — Action & Expression), and Affective (the "why" — Engagement). Each principle links to research evidence and practical classroom examples. An interactive graphic organiser allows educators to explore checkpoints and download the full framework. CAST also offers professional learning resources and free publications.

Who It Helps

Classroom teachers, special educators, curriculum designers, instructional coaches, and administrators who want to design learning environments that reduce barriers and support all students — including those with disabilities — from the start rather than as an afterthought.
