Social Security's Ticket to Work programme has supported hundreds of thousands of disability beneficiaries in entering or re-entering the workforce since its launch in 2001. The programme is free and voluntary, designed to remove financial barriers to employment for people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who want to work toward greater independence.
Ticket to Work connects beneficiaries to a national network of Employment Networks (ENs) and State Vocational Rehabilitation agencies offering free career counselling, job training, job placement, and benefits counselling. While a participant is actively using their Ticket, Social Security suspends medical Continuing Disability Reviews — protecting benefits while they test their ability to work. The Choose Work portal includes a searchable Find Help tool to locate local Employment Networks by ZIP code.
The programme serves SSDI and SSI beneficiaries aged 18 through 64 with any qualifying disability who want to move toward financial independence through work. It is especially valuable for people transitioning off benefits, those returning to work after an illness or injury, and young adults with disabilities who have never held steady employment.
