The Division for Early Childhood (DEC), a division of the Council for Exceptional Children, is the principal professional organisation for practitioners, researchers, and families in early intervention and early childhood special education (EI/ECSE). Founded in 1973, DEC sets the field's evidence base and advocates for high-quality, inclusive services for young children with disabilities and their families.
DEC publishes the DEC Recommended Practices — 66 research-validated practices across eight domains (Assessment, Environment, Family, Instruction, Interaction, Teaming, Transitions, and Leadership) — available free online and as downloadable PDFs. The organisation also publishes the Journal of Early Intervention, issues position statements on inclusion and natural environments, and maintains a family resource library explaining what high-quality EI/ECSE services should look like.
