Directed by Dr. Amy Wetherby at the FSU Autism Institute (College of Medicine), the FIRST WORDS® Project is a longitudinal research programme funded by the US Department of Education, National Institutes of Health, and CDC. Its mission is to improve the earliest possible identification of autism spectrum disorder and developmental language disorders by maximising the role of the family in screening.
The project's website offers free parent-facing resources including Social Communication Growth Charts tracking 16 early communication skills from 9–24 months, video examples of typical and atypical development side by side, and step-by-step guidance on accessing early intervention services. The team also developed the widely used Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales-Developmental Profile (CSBS-DP) screening instrument used by thousands of paediatricians across the US.
Parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers ages 9–24 months with concerns about communication development, including those at elevated risk for autism spectrum disorder. Also used by paediatricians, early intervention providers, and researchers focused on the earliest possible identification of language delays — a window often missed by traditional screening tools.
