About this resource

About

Released in February 2019, Live Transcribe & Sound Notifications was created by Google in collaboration with Gallaudet University, the premier deaf and hard-of-hearing university in the United States. The app is part of Android's core accessibility offerings and has been downloaded more than 100 million times.

What It Does

Live Transcribe displays a continuously scrolling caption of surrounding speech using Google's speech recognition engine, which supports 120+ languages and dialects. Users can type replies on a keyboard for two-way communication, and an external Bluetooth microphone can be connected for improved accuracy. Sound Notifications runs in parallel to identify and label environmental audio events.

Who It Helps

The app is designed for deaf and hard-of-hearing Android users who need real-time conversation access and ambient sound awareness throughout their daily lives.
