About this resource

About

Live Transcribe was developed by Google in partnership with Gallaudet University and launched in 2019. It uses Google's cloud speech recognition to provide instant captions on any Android device running version 5.0 or higher, and is free to download from the Play Store or pre-installed on many Android phones.

What It Does

The app displays rolling captions on screen as conversations unfold, letting users save recent transcripts for up to three days. Users can type text responses that play aloud, enabling two-way communication without speaking. The companion Notifications app identifies environmental sounds and flashes the screen or vibrates when important sounds like alarms or a crying baby are detected.

Who It Helps

Live Transcribe is ideal for Deaf and hard-of-hearing Android users who need accessible face-to-face communication without dedicated captioning hardware. The environmental sound alerts make it especially valuable for people who live independently and need awareness of home safety signals.
