About this resource

About

Learn Play Thrive was created by Kate McLaughlin, CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist specialising in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for children with complex communication needs. The platform is accredited for continuing education credits through both AOTA and ASHA, and is grounded in research on autonomous communication and self-determination.

What It Does

Learn Play Thrive offers a free "Authentic AAC" masterclass and podcast series covering how to introduce AAC to young children, model language using AAC systems in play-based routines, and support communication autonomy. Courses teach practical strategies clinicians and families can embed in everyday activities, with a consistent emphasis on presuming competence and avoiding prompt dependency that can limit children's communicative development.

Who It Helps

Designed for speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists working with children with complex communication needs, as well as families who want to actively support their child's communication at home. Particularly relevant for young children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or other conditions that affect speech development.
