Navigating College: A Handbook on Self Advocacy was published by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) in 2011 and remains the most widely cited peer-authored guide for autistic students in higher education. It was the first resource of its kind to centre autistic voices rather than those of parents or clinicians, and is freely available as a downloadable PDF.
The handbook provides practical, first-person guidance on every facet of college life: requesting and using academic accommodations, deciding whether and how to disclose a disability, navigating dorm life and roommate relationships, managing mental health, understanding sexuality and relationships, and building self-advocacy skills. Short, accessible chapters are written in plain language by autistic people who have lived these experiences.
Autistic students preparing for or currently attending college or university, particularly those who want advice from autistic adults rather than parents or professionals. Also useful for disability services staff and educators seeking an autistic-centred perspective on the higher education experience.
