About this resource

About

Founded in Cincinnati in 1996 and now operating at hundreds of sites across the United States and internationally, Project SEARCH takes place entirely within a host business or healthcare system. A special education teacher, skills trainers, and job coaches are embedded on-site throughout the year to provide continuous, immediate support.

What It Does

Participants complete three sequential internship rotations in real departments of the host employer, building a portfolio of marketable, transferable skills through total workplace immersion. Programme staff provide individualised coaching, employer feedback loops, and a supported job search upon graduation. Sites consistently report competitive, integrated employment rates of 70–100% within nine months of programme completion.

Who It Helps

Transition-age youth (typically 18–21, and up to 30 at some sites) with intellectual and developmental disabilities — including autism, Down syndrome, and other I/DD — who need intensive, structured, business-embedded support to achieve meaningful paid employment.
