About this resource

About

"Skills to Pay the Bills: Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success" was developed by the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) at the U.S. Department of Labor. Designed for delivery by youth development professionals, it is available free of charge in both English and Spanish and can supplement existing workforce curricula or stand alone.

What It Does

The curriculum provides six standalone modules — Communication, Enthusiasm and Attitude, Teamwork, Networking, Problem Solving and Critical Thinking, and Professionalism — each with interactive activities completable in under 30 minutes. Short video vignettes illustrate workplace scenarios, and all activities are adaptable for learners across a wide range of abilities, including in pre-employment transition services (Pre-ETS) settings under WIOA.

Who It Helps

Youth development professionals, special education transition teachers, and VR counsellors working with young people ages 14–21 in school, community, or workforce settings — particularly youth with disabilities who are preparing for their first jobs or re-entering the workforce.
