Organization
Australian Federation of Disability Organisations(AFDO)
The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is a national Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) governed and led by people with disability, working for long-term social change. Founded in 2003, AFDO represents member organisations across Australia and acts as a unified national voice on disability policy, rights, and NDIS reform.
About
The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) was established in 2003 as a Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) — governed by and for people with disability. It is a federation of cross-disability member organisations, each of which is also run by people with disability. AFDO is recognised as a Disability Representative Organisation (DRO) under the Australian Government's framework and holds international relationships with Disabled Peoples' International.
What They Do
AFDO undertakes national systemic advocacy, policy development, and research to advance the rights and inclusion of people with disability across Australian public life. It coordinates joint positions across member organisations, makes submissions to parliamentary inquiries and government consultations, and leads public awareness campaigns. AFDO is a strong voice in NDIS reform, housing, employment, and international human rights treaty reporting.
Who They Serve
AFDO represents its member organisations — national and state-based disability DPOs — and through them advocates for the interests of all Australians with disability. Its federation model amplifies the voices of people with a wide range of disabilities, from physical and sensory to intellectual and psychiatric, ensuring no cohort is left without national representation.
