Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program(ADAP)
The Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program is Alabama's federally designated protection and advocacy system, providing free legal advocacy and representation to Alabamians with disabilities from its base at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. For over 40 years ADAP has championed civil rights across education, employment, community integration, and safety for people with all disability types.
About
The Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program (ADAP) is Alabama's federally funded and designated P&A system, uniquely housed within the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. ADAP is the state's only comprehensive, cross-disability legal advocacy organisation and operates independently to protect the rights of Alabamians with disabilities.
What They Do
ADAP provides free legal representation and advocacy, conducts investigations and monitoring visits at institutions and community settings, pursues litigation to advance disability rights, delivers community outreach and training, and works for systemic policy change at the state level. Priority areas include special education, community integration under the ADA and Olmstead, and protection from abuse and neglect.
Who They Serve
ADAP serves Alabamians of all ages with any type of disability — physical, psychiatric, developmental, sensory, or chronic — statewide, prioritising those facing the most urgent threats to their safety, freedom, or access to services.
