Disability Rights Iowa (DRI) is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) agency created by Congress in the 1970s to address repeated abuse and neglect of people with disabilities in large institutions. Headquartered in Des Moines, DRI is not a government agency or service provider and operates without conflicts of interest.
What They Do
DRI provides legal representation and non-legal advocacy covering special education, employment, healthcare, housing, community integration, voting, and protection from abuse. The organisation conducts investigations, files legal action, and assists individuals in understanding and asserting their rights. Services are free regardless of income.
Who They Serve
Iowans with any disability — adults and youth — who face rights violations, discrimination, or barriers to services, including those in institutions, schools, and the community across all 99 Iowa counties.
