About
Disability Rights Tennessee (DRT) traces its roots to 1978, when a group of parents and advocates founded Education Advocacy for Children with Handicaps. Designated as Tennessee's Protection and Advocacy (P&A) system by Governor Lamar Alexander, DRT is today a nonpartisan nonprofit headquartered in Nashville and serving every one of the state's 95 counties.
What They Do
DRT provides free legal representation, investigation of abuse and neglect in residential and care facilities, information and referral, and training and outreach to organisations working with people with disabilities. DRT monitors settings where people receive disability services and supports the growth of self-advocacy throughout Tennessee.
Who They Serve
DRT serves Tennesseans with all types of disabilities and mental illness, across all ages and all 95 counties. Services are free of charge, with priority given to individuals whose rights have been violated in the places where they live, work, learn, or receive care.
