Disability Rights Texas(DRTx)
Disability Rights Texas is the federally designated protection and advocacy system for Texans with all types of disabilities, providing free legal representation and advocacy from eight regional offices across the state. DRTx fights rights violations through legal action, systemic advocacy, and monitoring of facilities and institutions.
About
Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) is Texas's federally designated protection and advocacy (P&A) organisation, created by Congress to ensure people with disabilities are safe from abuse and neglect and can exercise their legal right to community inclusion. Founded in 1977, it operates from offices in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock, McAllen, and San Antonio.
What They Do
DRTx provides free legal representation in special education, employment discrimination, healthcare access, housing, and institutional rights cases. The organisation also pursues systemic litigation, monitors facilities for abuse and neglect, and advocates at the Texas Legislature for laws and policies that protect people with disabilities.
Who They Serve
DRTx serves Texans of all ages with any type of disability, prioritising individuals facing urgent rights violations — including abuse, neglect, denial of community services, and unlawful institutionalisation.
