FISH was established in Rome in 1994 as the Federazione Italiana per il Superamento dell'Handicap and recently updated its name to Federazione Italiana per i Diritti delle Persone con Disabilità e Famiglie, reflecting a rights-based approach. Its headquarters are in the Parioli district of Rome.
