Organization
Indigenous Disability Canada(IDC)
Canada's national Indigenous disability organization, formed in 1991 to serve and advocate for First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people with disabilities. IDC works to ensure Indigenous people with disabilities can access culturally appropriate services and fully exercise their rights.
About
Indigenous Disability Canada (IDC), formerly the British Columbia Aboriginal Network on Disability Society (BCANDS), was formed in 1991 and is headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia, with additional offices in Ottawa. IDC is the only national organization in Canada dedicated exclusively to the rights and wellbeing of Indigenous people with disabilities.
What They Do
IDC conducts research, delivers community-based programming, provides information and referral services, and advocates at federal, provincial, and territorial levels for the rights of Indigenous people with disabilities. The organization bridges Indigenous rights frameworks with disability rights frameworks, addressing the compounding effects of both systems of discrimination.
Who They Serve
IDC serves First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people with any type of disability across Canada, with particular attention to those in remote or underserved communities who face compounded barriers due to both disability and Indigenous status.
