The League of Human Dignity (LHD), founded in 1971, is Nebraska's cornerstone Center for Independent Living, consumer-controlled from its founding and governed by a board majority of people with disabilities. With offices in Lincoln, Omaha, Norfolk, and Council Bluffs (Iowa), LHD has been advancing the independent living philosophy in the region for over five decades.
What They Do
LHD delivers all five federally mandated CIL core services: peer support and counselling, independent living skills training, information and referral, individual advocacy, and transition from institutions and nursing facilities to community living. Additional programmes include home accessibility grants, assistive equipment loans and repairs, personal care attendant (PCA) hiring support, and Medicaid waiver services. LHD serves 62+ Nebraska counties.
Who They Serve
Nebraskans with any physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychiatric disability of any age seeking to live independently in their communities, with particular focus on people transitioning from nursing facilities, hospitals, or other institutional settings into home and community life.
