Organization
Lebanese Physically Handicapped Union(LPHU)
A Beirut-based advocacy organization founded in 1981, led by and for people with physical disabilities in Lebanon. LPHU campaigns for disability rights legislation, urban accessibility, and social inclusion through eight branches across the country.
About
The Lebanese Physically Handicapped Union (LPHU) was founded in 1981 as a grassroots, non-sectarian organization led by people with physical disabilities. Born from activists organizing on Beirut's streets, LPHU was among the first disability-led advocacy organizations in the Arab world. It operates with over 1,200 members across eight branches throughout Lebanon.
What They Do
LPHU advocates for disability rights legislation, accessible public infrastructure, and social protection policies at the national level. The union provides peer support networks, legal advice, and representation for members facing discrimination or barriers. It actively lobbies parliament on inclusive education, accessible transportation, and employment equity, and remains a consistent voice in Lebanese civil society even amid the country's ongoing political and economic challenges.
Who They Serve
LPHU's primary constituency is adults with physical disabilities across Lebanon, though its advocacy work benefits all persons with disabilities. The union's peer-led model means members connect with others who share lived experience of disability — particularly valuable where disability services remain chronically underfunded.
