About
The National Federation of the Disabled — Nepal (NFDN) is Nepal's principal national umbrella organisation of persons with disabilities, officially formed in 1993 and registered with the District Administration Office of Kathmandu. Located at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, NFDN federates over 350 member organisations operating at national, district, and local levels across all seven provinces of Nepal.
What They Do
NFDN advocates for the rights-based approach to disability in Nepali law and policy, actively engaging with government on the implementation of the CRPD, which Nepal ratified in 2010. The federation produces shadow reports for UN treaty bodies, monitors disability rights compliance, and supports member organisations' capacity development. It campaigns on accessible elections, inclusive education, and the removal of discriminatory legal provisions that historically barred persons with disabilities from civic roles.
Who They Serve
NFDN serves persons with all types of disabilities throughout Nepal's diverse geography — from Kathmandu's urban centres to remote mountain and Terai communities. Its federated structure amplifies the voices of local DPOs that would otherwise be isolated from national policy processes, with particular attention to disability rights at the intersection of caste, ethnicity, gender, and geography.
