Network and Outreach for Disability Education and Sensitization(NODES)
Founded in 2014 at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine campus, NODES is a Trinidad and Tobago network that brings together academics, activists, and persons with disabilities to advance education, sensitisation, and self-representation across the Caribbean. It hosts international conferences, publishes accessible disability media, and maintains a comprehensive directory of disability organisations.
About
NODES (Network and Outreach for Disability Education and Sensitization) was founded in 2014 at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine campus in Trinidad and Tobago by Dr. Jean Antoine-Dunne and colleagues working in the field of disability. The network leverages the university's resources and reach to connect diverse disability groups and promote systemic change in how disability is understood and addressed throughout the Caribbean region.
What They Do
NODES sensitises the public to challenges faced by persons with disabilities, facilitates self-representation and advocacy, addresses stereotyping, promotes positive disability portrayals, and advances access to higher education. It publishes a disability magazine targeting the general public with contributions from persons with varying disabilities, and in 2015 hosted the inaugural international conference "Towards Social Integration: Rights, Roles, Recognition of Persons with Disabilities."
Who They Serve
NODES serves persons with all disability types in Trinidad and Tobago, alongside students, academics, and civil society organisations working to advance disability inclusion across the Caribbean. Its network spans both university-based researchers and community disability groups.
