About

The Starkloff Disability Institute (SDI) is a St. Louis, Missouri-based nonprofit founded in 2003 by disability rights pioneer Max Starkloff — a quadriplegic activist widely credited as one of the founders of the Midwest independent living movement — together with Colleen Starkloff and David Newburger. SDI advances disability inclusion in employment and civic life from an explicitly disability-led perspective.

What They Do

SDI provides career coaching and professional development for job seekers and employees with disabilities, and delivers employer-facing disability inclusion consulting to help businesses hire, retain, and advance disabled workers. It runs an annual national Disability Employment Summit, produces research and frameworks for building inclusive workplaces, and cultivates a network of disability-confident employers and leaders across the United States.

Who They Serve

The Starkloff Disability Institute serves adults with disabilities seeking employment and career advancement, as well as employers, HR professionals, and business leaders across the country who want to build more genuinely inclusive, disability-confident organisations.

Community Note

Co-founded by Max Starkloff, disability rights pioneer and quadriplegic activist; received a 2024 Yield Giving Open Call grant.
