About
Aira was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in San Diego, California. Trained Aira Agents assist with virtually any visual task in real time via the live video feed from a user's smartphone camera. A growing global network of Access Partners — businesses and institutions that sponsor free Aira access — makes the service available at no cost in thousands of locations.
What It Does
Users tap a large button in the Aira app to connect instantly with a trained visual interpreter, who sees what the camera sees and provides real-time audio guidance. Agents assist with outdoor and indoor navigation, reading signage and printed materials, using computers and printers, grocery shopping, managing medical appointments, completing forms, and describing live events or sports. The service is available 24/7 with no advance booking required.
Who It Helps
Aira serves blind and low-vision individuals who need skilled, immediate human visual assistance — particularly in situations where AI descriptions alone are insufficient, such as complex navigation, nuanced environmental details, or tasks requiring real-time judgement. The Access Partner network makes Aira widely available on campuses, in hospitals, and at airports.
