About this resource

About

Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Carlsbad, California, Aira has built a global network of professionally trained visual interpreters and pioneered the hybrid model of combining human expertise with AI image analysis. Aira Access Partners — including dozens of major airports, universities, grocery chains, and healthcare systems — provide free Aira access to anyone on-site, no subscription required.

What It Does

Users download the free Aira Explorer app, create an account, and connect to a visual interpreter with one tap. The interpreter streams live video from the user's camera along with GPS location, allowing them to narrate surroundings, read documents, guide navigation, assist with online tasks, and describe images in real time. The free Access AI feature instantly generates AI image descriptions for any photo without using subscription minutes, and users can escalate to a human interpreter to verify AI responses. Aira also integrates with Meta smart glasses for hands-free access.

Who It Helps

Aira is used by people who are blind or have low vision for tasks ranging from reading mail and navigating airports to exploring new cities, reviewing documents at work, and attending meetings. The 24/7 availability and free access-partner network make it particularly valuable for travel and education settings.
