About this resource

About

CanPlan was created by CanAssist, a research and development programme at the University of Victoria (BC, Canada) that designs assistive technologies with and for people with disabilities. The app is free on both iOS and Android, with users able to email canassist@uvic.ca for support.

What It Does

Caregivers, therapists, or users themselves photograph each step of a routine and add optional text labels and audio instructions. Tasks are filed in customisable categories such as Food Preparation, Household Chores, Shopping, Transportation, or Workplace Tasks. A daily schedule view and timed reminder system prompt users when each task is due, and an active-task alert keeps them on track until each step is complete.

Who It Helps

People with acquired brain injury, dementia (including Alzheimer's disease), autism spectrum disorder, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, dyslexia, and other developmental or intellectual disabilities who benefit from visual, step-by-step prompting to build or maintain independence in daily activities.
