About this resource

About

The Communication Matrix was first published in 1990 by Dr Charity Rowland of Oregon Health & Science University and has since been made freely available worldwide. It is a standard clinical and research tool for assessing early communication and is used across age groups and disability types.

What It Does

Users complete an online profile that maps communication behaviours across seven levels of intentionality, identifying what forms a person uses and what purposes they communicate for. Detailed reports guide goal-setting and intervention planning. A multilingual community forum connects practitioners supporting people with complex communication needs.

Who It Helps

Professionals, educators, and caregivers supporting children and adults who function at the earliest stages of communication, including those with severe and multiple disabilities, deafblindness, and complex communication needs. Available in multiple languages at no cost.
