About this resource

About

LC Technologies has been developing eye-gaze communication technology since 1989, originally based on NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory research. The EyeGaze Edge is a self-contained portable device that houses the camera, processor, and display in a single unit requiring no separate computer.

What It Does

An infrared camera samples the user's eye position 60 times per second to determine gaze direction with high precision. Users access symbol communication boards, a full keyboard, pre-stored phrases, phone dialling, and environmental controls. Integration with the companion Ability Drive app also enables hands-free power wheelchair control through gaze.

Who It Helps

People with severe motor disabilities who cannot use touch or traditional input — primarily individuals with ALS, locked-in syndrome, high-level spinal cord injury, brainstem stroke, or advanced muscular dystrophy. Best suited to adults and older teenagers, particularly those with acquired or progressive conditions.
