About this resource

About

Lookout was developed by Google in close collaboration with the blind and low-vision community. It uses the same AI infrastructure as other Google accessibility products, with generative AI features enabling richer scene descriptions and conversational follow-up questions. The app is free and requires no account.

What It Does

Lookout offers seven modes: Text (read printed and digital text), Documents (scan multi-page documents or handwriting), Explore (describe objects and surroundings in the scene), Currency (identify banknotes), Food labels (identify packaged goods by barcode or label), Find (locate a specific object within the camera view), and Images (describe and chat with photos). Users can ask follow-up questions about scanned images using generative AI.

Who It Helps

Lookout is designed for Android users who are blind or have low vision and need reliable visual assistance throughout daily life — from reading menus, labels, and mail to navigating new environments and understanding images shared digitally.
