About this resource

About

Sound Amplifier was developed by Google using data from thousands of hearing studies and is pre-installed on modern Android devices. It effectively turns any pair of headphones into a personal hearing enhancement device, making quiet or muffled speech more audible in everyday environments without requiring a clinical hearing aid.

What It Does

The app provides real-time audio processing with controls for boosting speech, reducing background noise, and adjusting high-frequency sounds independently for each ear. A Pixel-exclusive Conversation Mode uses the device camera to focus processing on the person speaking directly to the user, isolating their voice from surrounding sounds in noisy spaces like cafes or transport.

Who It Helps

People with mild to moderate hearing loss who want clearer speech in noisy environments — restaurants, classrooms, workplaces — without a clinical hearing aid. Also useful as a supplement to existing hearing aids in challenging listening situations.
