About
Founded in 1979, the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) is run primarily by and for people with hearing loss, distinguishing it from clinician-led hearing health organisations. It operates 14 state associations and over 200 local chapters, and publishes the free Hearing Loss Magazine.
What It Does
HLAA maintains a searchable Hearing Loop location directory — part of its "Get in the Hearing Loop" campaign — helping users find telecoil-compatible looped venues such as theatres, airports, and houses of worship. The website hosts a technology library covering hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, captioning services, and app reviews. HLAA also advocates for ADA-compliant hearing loop installation in public venues and runs an annual walk to raise awareness.
Who It Helps
Adults with any degree of acquired hearing loss — whether age-related, sudden, or progressive — who are seeking community, technology guidance, and advocacy. Resources are also useful for family members, audiologists, and architects or facility managers seeking hearing loop guidance.
