About
Lazarillo launched in 2016 as a social enterprise built in direct collaboration with blind and low-vision users. The app is free on both iOS and Android and has grown into a multipurpose accessibility platform also used by financial institutions, public transit agencies, theatres, and hospitals through its Smart Cities programme. Lazarillo has received recognition from IKEA Social Entrepreneurship among other supporters of inclusive innovation.
What It Does
Lazarillo announces the user's current address, nearby street intersections, businesses, transit stops, and landmarks as they walk, ride, or travel by car. Users search for a destination and receive audio turn-by-turn guidance, browse nearby points of interest by category, and save favourite locations. The app works in the background with the screen off — keeping the phone pocketed while providing continuous audio cues. Voice, speed, pitch, language, and unit preferences are fully customisable.
Who It Helps
Lazarillo is designed for blind and low-vision users who want a free, cross-platform accessible navigation tool with strong multilingual support. Its co-design approach with disabled users and broad geographic coverage make it particularly valued in Latin America, Europe, and communities where other paid navigation apps may be inaccessible by cost.
