About
Lazarillo is a free, fully accessible GPS navigation app developed with ongoing input from people who are blind or have low vision. Available on iOS and Android, the app was designed and built alongside its community of users. The name references the literary guide-figure from the Spanish picaresque classic who leads a blind master through the world.
What It Does
As users move, Lazarillo announces the street they are on, upcoming intersections, nearby businesses, and public transit stops in real time. Users can search for a specific destination and follow turn-by-turn audio guidance. The app integrates fully with VoiceOver on iOS and TalkBack on Android, supports indoor mapping at select venues, and includes accessible outdoor trails and parks for recreational use. Destination sharing and integration with other navigation services are also supported.
Who It Helps
Primarily serves blind and low vision pedestrians and transit riders who need independent, audio-first navigation. Particularly useful for orientation and mobility training, daily commuting, and travelling confidently to unfamiliar locations.
