About
Originally developed by ReWalk Robotics and now marketed under Lifeward, the ReWalk Personal Exoskeleton received FDA clearance in 2014 as the first exoskeleton approved for home and community ambulation. It is covered by Medicare and provided through a network of certified ReWalk Training Centres across the United States and internationally.
What It Does
Powered hip and knee actuators respond to subtle forward shifts in the user's centre of gravity, coordinating a natural heel-to-toe gait cycle. Users can stand, walk on level surfaces, turn, and navigate stairs and curbs using forearm crutches and a wrist-worn controller. A structured onboarding programme at a certified training centre ensures safe, progressive skill development before users take the device home for independent use.
Who It Helps
Adults with complete or incomplete spinal cord injury at levels T7–L5 who are interested in standing and community ambulation as part of their independence routine, as well as VA hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and physiatrists evaluating personal exoskeleton options for their patients.
