About this resource

About

Seeing AI was created within Microsoft by a team led by Saqib Shaikh, a software engineer who is blind, ensuring the app reflects the genuine daily needs of its users. Originally launched on iOS in 2017, it has since expanded to Android and is free to download worldwide. The app is self-voicing — users do not need to enable VoiceOver or TalkBack to operate it.

What It Does

Seeing AI offers multiple specialist channels: Short Text instantly reads text that appears in the camera frame; Document mode captures and reads full printed pages with formatting; Product mode scans barcodes to identify items; Person mode recognises faces and describes expressions; Scene mode generates AI descriptions of surroundings; Currency mode identifies banknotes; Colour mode announces dominant colours; Handwriting mode reads handwritten text; and Light Detection mode describes ambient light conditions. Each channel is optimised for a specific task, making everyday activities more independent.

Who It Helps

Seeing AI is designed for people who are blind or have low vision. It is widely used for grocery shopping, reading mail, exploring new environments, understanding printed materials in school or work, and social recognition tasks.
