About this resource

About

Founded in 2007, SpecialEffect believes that video gaming is a fundamental right for everyone, including those with severe physical disabilities. Based in Oxfordshire, UK, the charity works globally to remove barriers to gaming through technology adaptation, specialist expertise, and freely available developer tools. Their work extends into hospital settings and homes, reaching people who are largely cut off from recreational activity.

What It Offers

  • EyeMine: Free software enabling Minecraft to be controlled entirely by eye gaze — designed for players who cannot use hands
  • Eye Gaze Games: A free collection of web-based games fully playable by eye control, usable in hospitals and care settings
  • GameAccess: A database of accessibility information for commercial games and adaptive equipment
  • DevKit: A free tool helping game developers test and improve motor accessibility in their titles
  • Specialist assessments: Free one-to-one sessions helping individuals find the right setup for their abilities

Who It's For

SpecialEffect serves physically disabled people of all ages — from children with cerebral palsy to adults with progressive neurological conditions. All direct services are provided free of charge. The DevKit and GameAccess database are aimed at game developers wanting to improve accessibility.
