About
Windows Live Captions is a built-in accessibility feature in Windows 11 that automatically transcribes any audio source—device speakers, microphone, or both—into real-time on-screen text. Processing is entirely local; no audio or caption data is sent to Microsoft or the cloud, making it suitable for confidential settings.
What It Does
Activated via the keyboard shortcut Win + Ctrl + L or through Accessibility Settings, Live Captions displays captions in a resizable bar at the top, bottom, or floating anywhere on the screen. Users can customise caption position, font size, colour, and contrast. The feature supports 21 languages and regional variants and captions any audio source currently active on the computer—including streaming video, podcasts, video calls, or a microphone pointed at a speaker in the room.
Who It Helps
Deaf and hard-of-hearing Windows users who want always-available captions for streaming media, video calls, or in-person conversation without installing third-party software. Also benefits users in noisy environments, people with auditory processing difficulties, and non-native language learners.
