About
Founded in 1971 and chartered in Illinois, the American Blind Skiing Foundation (ABSF) is a 501(c)(3) national nonprofit dedicated to making downhill skiing and snowboarding accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. Operating through a network of trained volunteer guide instructors, ABSF has helped generations of blind and low-vision participants experience alpine snow sports.
What It Does
ABSF provides adaptive ski and snowboard instruction on alpine slopes with a sighted guide for every participant. Guides ski alongside or slightly ahead, communicating turns, terrain changes, and speed adjustments through verbal cues and coordinated movement. The foundation trains and certifies new volunteer guides, runs fundraising events to sustain its programmes, and maintains a membership community for participants and supporters.
Who It Helps
ABSF serves children and adults who are blind or have low vision and wish to participate in alpine skiing or snowboarding. Participants with varying degrees of vision loss are welcomed, and no prior snow-sports experience is required.
