About this resource

About

The American Printing House for the Blind (APH) is the world's leading nonprofit organisation for people with visual impairments, and its ConnectCenter VisionAware platform provides free, vetted guidance across all areas of daily life including recreation. The Cards & Games section helps newly blind adults and long-time BVI players adapt their favourite table games.

What It Does

The guide covers six practical areas: optimising room lighting for low vision play; using low vision devices at the gaming table; adapting standard games with tactile labels and high-contrast bold markers; choosing solid background colours that make cards "pop"; maximising contrast between pieces and playing surfaces; and sourcing commercial Braille or large-print game products. It links to specific accessible products including bold-print playing cards, all-plastic Braille-overlaid decks, and tactile board game sets.

Who It Helps

Adults who are blind or have low vision — including those newly experiencing vision loss — who want practical, trusted guidance on continuing to enjoy card and board games independently or with sighted family members and friends.
