About this resource

About

Arts of Life, founded in 2000 in Chicago, was the first programme in the city to provide employment in the arts for adults with developmental disabilities. A MacArthur Foundation grantee, Arts of Life operates studios in Chicago's West Town neighbourhood and suburban Glenview, supporting around 65 artists who receive monthly stipends and bonuses from art sales.

What It Does

Artists attend open studio sessions and work from individualized project plans, with one-to-one visual arts instruction available to develop skills and practice. The affiliated Circle Contemporary—Chicago's only gallery dedicated to exhibiting artists with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities—provides professional exhibition opportunities alongside shows in broader venues.

Who It Helps

Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Chicago metropolitan area who want to develop and sustain professional careers in the visual arts.
