About
Ignite Adaptive Sports — formerly the Eldora Special Recreation Program — was founded in 1975 when a group gained permission from Eldora Mountain Resort to run an alpine adaptive skiing programme for ten athletes with disabilities. Over fifty years it has grown into a volunteer team of more than 230 instructors serving over 300 students each winter season. In 2023 the organisation opened a dedicated $1.9 million adaptive sports facility at the base of Eldora Mountain.
What It Does
Ignite offers fully volunteer-led adaptive lessons in downhill skiing, snowboarding, sit-skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ski biking — all at no cost to participants. Its location at Eldora Mountain, just 21 miles from Boulder, makes it the only adaptive snow sports programme on Colorado's eastern slope and the only one reachable by public bus from Denver's Front Range communities.
Who It Helps
Children and adults with a wide range of physical and mobility disabilities who want to experience snow sports. The programme is especially valuable for Front Range Colorado residents seeking adaptive winter recreation without long mountain drives.
