About this resource

About

Access/VSA — formerly Very Special Arts — was founded in 1974 under the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and has grown into an international programme with affiliate sites in more than 50 countries. Their founding belief is that all people with disabilities deserve equal access to arts education, cultural facilities, and careers in the arts. The programme encompasses direct programming, artist development, educator resources, and institutional capacity-building.

What It Offers

  • VSA Emerging Young Artists Programme: Annual national showcase of visual art by emerging artists with disabilities aged 16–25, with work touring nationally
  • VSA International Young Musicians Programme: Recognising and showcasing exceptional young musicians aged 14–25 with disabilities
  • Creative Career Internship Programme: Competitive employment development for people with disabilities aged 21–30 in arts administration, design, and technical theatre
  • Programme Sites: Grants supporting arts education organisations to provide accessible arts-based education pre-K through Grade 12
  • Accessible performances at the Kennedy Center: Assistive listening, sign language interpretation, braille/large-print programmes, and sensory-friendly events

Who It's For

Access/VSA serves people with disabilities across all ages — from pre-kindergarten arts education through professional artist development. Resources on their website are freely available to educators, artists, families, and arts organisations.
