About
Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation was founded in 1982 by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Omar Crothers and Sunday River founder Leslie Otten after Dr. Crothers observed a young patient with cerebral palsy skiing with ease on the slopes. What began as a small winter ski programme has grown into a four-season organisation with its own 4,300-square-foot slope-side facility at Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine.
What It Does
Every programme Maine Adaptive offers — winter and summer — is completely free to participants, including all instruction, adaptive equipment, and lift tickets or trail passes. Winter offerings include alpine skiing and snowboarding, Nordic skiing, and snowshoeing. The summer programme covers mountain biking, paddling, pickleball, and indoor climbing. The organisation serves children and adults with a wide variety of disabilities year-round.
Who It Helps
Children and adults in Maine and New England with physical, cognitive, and other disabilities. Because all programming is free and takes place at a resort campus with dedicated adaptive facilities, Maine Adaptive removes both financial and logistical barriers to snow sports participation.
