About this resource

About

The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) was founded in 1949 by World War II veterans using wheelchairs, making it the oldest organised wheelchair sport in the United States. Today the NWBA governs more than 200 teams across men's, women's, youth, collegiate, and Intercollegiate divisions, with over 3,500 registered players.

What It Does

The NWBA organises regional and national championships, supports youth development programmes, and coordinates the US National Wheelchair Basketball Teams that compete internationally. Any person who requires a wheelchair for sport due to a permanent physical disability is eligible to compete. A classification system (1.0–4.5 functional points) ensures fair play across different levels of physical function within each team.

Who It Helps

Children (youth division starts at age 7) and adults with spinal cord injuries, amputations, cerebral palsy, and other lower-limb impairments who want to play competitive or recreational wheelchair basketball. Teams are located across the US and Canada — use the team finder on the NWBA website.
